Frequently Asked Questions
About Bunny Search, cruelty-free certification, and the differences between PETA, Leaping Bunny, NATRUE, and the other organizations we aggregate.
What is Bunny Search?
Bunny Search is a free, independent app and web directory that aggregates cruelty-free and vegan brand data from 9 certification organizations into one searchable database of 10,000+ brands. It runs on iOS, Android, and the web.
Is Bunny Search free?
Yes. Free on iOS, Android, and the web. There are no ads, no paywalls, and no premium tier.
How is Bunny Search different from PETA's Bunny Free app?
Bunny Free shows only PETA's list. Bunny Search shows PETA plus 8 other organizations — Leaping Bunny, Cruelty Free International, Ethical Elephant, Naturewatch Compassionate Shopping Guide, Responsible Mica Initiative, ECOCERT, NATRUE, and others — so you can see when sources agree or disagree about a brand. See the full app comparison.
What does "cruelty-free" actually mean?
There is no single legal definition. Generally it means a brand does not test finished products or ingredients on animals, and does not commission others to do so. Each certification body applies a different standard: PETA accepts a signed statement of assurance, Leaping Bunny requires supplier monitoring and audits, NATRUE certifies under broader natural-cosmetics rules. Bunny Search shows all of them so you can apply your own definition.
Does cruelty-free mean vegan?
No. Cruelty-free means not tested on animals. Vegan means contains no animal-derived ingredients (like beeswax, lanolin, carmine, or collagen). A brand can be one without the other.
Why do different organizations classify the same brand differently?
They use different criteria. PETA's standard is lighter than Leaping Bunny's. Some lists count selling in mainland China as disqualifying; others don't. A brand can be on PETA's cruelty-free list and on Ethical Elephant's grey area list at the same time. Bunny Search shows every source so you can see the full picture.
Where does Bunny Search get its data?
From 9 published certification lists: PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies and Companies That Do Test on Animals lists, Leaping Bunny, Cruelty Free International, Ethical Elephant, Naturewatch Foundation Compassionate Shopping Guide, Responsible Mica Initiative, ECOCERT, and NATRUE. Each brand page links the original source so you can verify any individual entry. See the full sources page.
How accurate is Bunny Search?
Bunny Search re-syncs from each certification body's published list periodically. The original lists are maintained by those organizations. If you spot a discrepancy or out-of-date entry, email [email protected] and we'll check the source.
What does "In PETA's DO TEST list" mean?
It means PETA has flagged the company as not having committed to ending animal testing under PETA's criteria. Common reasons include selling in mainland China (where animal testing was historically required for imported cosmetics), using ingredients that require safety testing, or not having documented their policy to PETA's satisfaction.
What does "status unknown" mean on a brand page?
It means none of the 9 tracked organizations currently lists this brand. It does not necessarily mean the brand tests on animals — many small or independent brands have not applied for certification. We recommend contacting the brand directly for their animal testing policy.
Does Bunny Search have a barcode scanner?
Yes, in the iOS and Android apps. Open the scanner, point at any product barcode, and the brand and certification status load instantly. The web directory is search-only.
Can I use Bunny Search without creating an account?
Yes. The web directory at bunnysearch.app/brands requires no account. The mobile app also works without signing up; favorites are stored locally on your device.
Does Bunny Search sell user data?
No. The web directory doesn't require an account. The app stores your favorites locally. See the full privacy policy.
Is Bunny Search affiliated with PETA, Leaping Bunny, or any certification body?
No. Bunny Search is an independent project. It is not owned by, sponsored by, or affiliated with any certification body or cosmetics brand. That independence is what allows it to present every body's perspective neutrally.
Why does a cruelty-free brand show as having a non-cruelty-free parent company?
Many independent cruelty-free brands have been acquired by larger conglomerates whose other lines are not cruelty-free. The brand itself can still meet certification, but supporting it routes some money to the parent company. Bunny Search shows the ownership chain so you can decide what matters to you.
What apps are similar to Bunny Search?
Bunny Free (PETA), Cruelty Cutter (Beagle Freedom Project), Think Dirty, Yuka, and Cruelty-Free Bear all overlap with Bunny Search. They differ in scope and number of sources. See the full comparison.
How can I suggest a brand to add or report incorrect data?
Email [email protected] with the brand name and source. We re-check against the original certification list and update accordingly.
